I have some Swordtails, they are orange with a black outline on the tail and red inside the black. I was wondering if you can cross swords with platties. I heard that's how you get different colors of swordtails. If so, should I put a male sword with a female platty or vice-versa? And will it affect the length of the sword?

I will attempt to help , I may be wrong as I am new as well,I hope I will be corrected if I am wrong,I believe they can cross ,they are near the same family...As far as colors , I also believe that their color and tail size will depend on the genetics of the couple ,and so on through their fry...
Like I said I am a baby in this ,I do it to soothe my soul ,so I dont die soon,as I have many health issues ,I have to live with...It helps ,soothe my spirit...If I am incorrect ,please someone ,share with us ,so we both will learn...

Thank you ,Sincerely ,Mongoose

Yes, they will cross breed. If you got the fish from a LPS, they probably have multiple color genes. Which means, no matter what color fish you breed, you will most likely have many different colors of fry. I'm not sure whether cross breeding will effect sword length. Maybe somebody else will know.

Thanks, I think I'll get some female platties and see what happens.
