I'm pretty sure it isn't possible. The molly's sperm wouldn't be compatible with the platies's eggs. The DNA of the two fish just aren't compatible. (I think. Somebody back me up on this.)

What makes you think that it is trying to spawn with the other fish? I'm just curious, because it sounds odd.:%) Also, what are the genders of your mollies and platies? How many of each do you have? Maybe your molly is lonely.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Well, he has a biological drive to spawn; going after the platies primarily may be related to their colors, pheremones, anything at all. It doesn't mean he's not impregnating mollies left and right, either.

As Little Mousling said, these fishes just follow their biological drive. Mollies and platies aren't that different from each other, relative to other fishes, so it's not surprising that there would be some confusion, especially if there are no female mollies through which he can channel his drive.

I had a male mouse try to impregnate a male hamster before when it was just the two of them.

Mollies and platies are not close enough taxonically to inter-breed. Mollies and guppies yes. Sowrds and platies yes, but not mollies and platies. Won't keep him from trying though.

Not necessarilty....trans-genus hybrids are far from unheard of.

They might be not unheard of but a molly platy cross is unheard of. And there has certainly been more than enough opportunity.

I am not so sure. Somewhere, I believe I have data on a Xiphophorus xiphidium x Poecilia sphenops hybrid created in Germany in the late 80's.

I could believe it. I had 2 sailfin mollies 1m 1f and a single "virgin" female platy in a tank together at one time and the male molly got some business on with the female platy. I removed her once I noticed how pregnant she was.
She is getting close to her due date so I will let you know if I have a successful molly-platy hybrid!
