I have heard varying answers.

First was that they were missing vertebrae
Second was the colour
third was the balloon mutation commonly seen in mollies.

Does anyone know?

The only time I have heard coral and platy mentioned in the same sentence is in ref. to the blue coral color of platy. Sorry that is all I know.

Im pretty sure Coral is a color.
I had one, it was a whitish-bluey
color in front with a reddish tail end.

It used to be "coral blue" which are like you describe, but there are fish coming through now labelled "coral red" which makes me wonder why, if its a colour, did they need to put 'blue' after the name.

all so muddlesome

Coral red and coral blue are 2 diff colors
I thought. The coral reds here are white front
with red back end. The coral blues are red back
end with a blueish white front end.

I am starting to think it is a marketing thing. The scientists have their scientific names ie. Xiphophorus Variatus, and the folks at the stores need a more exciting yet simple name for the fish. So you have names like "Coral Blue Platy" instead of just "blue platy", or "Sunset Coral Platy" instead of "Yellow with Red tail Platy". Lol! You get the point. It's gotta be a marketing gimick that caught on and now everyone is using "Coral" in the color variations.

Yup, it's marketing. We used to get the same exact fish under two different names at least once a month. They just change the common names if the fish don't sell as well for a little while. They make up something that seems more exciting and suddenly people just -have- to have this 'new fish' they've never seen before. I've only noticed this with livebearers so far.

Sometimes regular customers will buy them and I -know- I sold them a fish that looks just like the one they bought last week, but they won't realize it 'til they get home. =/ If they even do then. I swear, some of these people don't pay -any- attention.
