As far as guppies, this little guy was a freebie I found in a bag when I purchased some kuhlis. Most people here say it's a wild guppy; my point in regards to crossing species is that there are so many naturally fantastic colored fish why mess with nature. And, show some respect by reading the entire thread before you post something. It does no one any good to post missinformation or double post information that has already been posted. So please, read the entire thread closely if you want to make posts in it. There is always a bigger fish... |

It is fully stocked with just them. Now, if you do regular water changes of 30-50% on a weekly basis, you will be fine with the stock you currently have. But, I would not add anymore. My suggestions though, are to get rid of one of the BNs buy taking it back to the lfs and trade it in for the other fish you want to add. If you do this, I think you will again be fine with adding the other males you are looking to do at this time. Although, the male guppies will be much more active if there is a female for them to chase around. As for crossing the different species of fish. All I can do is ask you and anyone else not to do it. It will not stregthen any genetic pools, only cause mutated and cross bred fish, as the genes of these new fish will be crossed/mutated, and not strengthened. If you want to stregthen the genetic pools of the guppy, then get some wild guppies, or next to wild, get some feeder guppies, as these are wild guppies bred in lakes. There is always a bigger fish... |

Janna Mega Fish Posts: 1386 Registered: 24-Aug-2003 | I wouldn't get the endlers purely because that tank is already fully stocked. The bristlenose plecos get too big for the tank, and I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it. That was also rather hypocritical of you to yell at Teresa for something that you misread. You should be glad it was her that was in that place, since I know many members (including myself) would not have been as patient and forgiving. They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver, So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces. |

Also, typing in all caps, is, to say the least, irritating. As for the endlers, I'd do all endlers if you want them at all, for sake of consistency. One bright veiltail guppy is, IME, out of place in a school of male endlers. |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | And it wouldn't really be "enriching" the pool - you couldn't sell the fry as guppies, after all. They'd be a cross. There may be more guppies in the world than Endler's but I still don't want to end up with hybrids when I go out to buy guppies. PondCometer Fingerling Posts: 31 Kudos: 22 Votes: 5 Registered: 25-Nov-2004 | Yes Sneaky_Pete I see your idea but if you cross them you'll only get one generation of the specific trait your looking to "bring" into the guppy pool because the off-spring will be sterile so they wont be able to pass on their genes |

That is exactly why if I can ever find endlers here, I would keep them seperate from guppies. With the exception that I would likely get 2x as many males and allow a couple males to breed with the guppy females. You see what I mean? So as not to harm the endler genetics, but to enrich the guppy genetic pool. Come Play Yahtzee With Me! http://games.atari.com Http://www.myleague.com/yahtgames |

labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | I have a 10 gallon at the moment with: 1 guppy 2 platys 1 platy fry 2 bristle nose catfish I was thinking of adding a betta, but I read they get mixed up with the guppies and think they are bettas. If I did I would get 2 more guppies.(I had 4 but 3 died of different parasites.) Then I had an idea, the other day at my lfs I saw a tank full of endlers and pygmy rasboras(dwarf rasboras, same diff.) Tehy were so cute!!!!!!!!!!!! And they are only an inch big. so I was thinking I could instead of getting more big guppies, maybe get endlers instead since I could get more. Would the big guppy pick on the endlers? HE is very gentle and doesn't look the meanie type like my platy. My platy seems to reverse into the other platy and the guppy and sla[p them with her tail. So I thought I could maybe divide the tank, one half, platys and 1 bristle nose, second half, guppy, endlers, 1 bristle nose. Thankyou! Labrakitty |

labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | FOR THE LAST TIME, HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS ACTUALLY READ MY POSTS AND NOT IGNORED THE FACT THAT I AM NOT GOING TO BREED THEM WIHT GUPPIES. THEY WILL ALL BE MALE. THE GUPPY I HAVE IS MALE. I NEVER SAID THAT MY GUPPY WAS FEMLAE, AND I HAVE ALREADY TOLD YOU TWICE THEY WILL ALL BE MALE AND WILL NOT BREED! SO WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? |

Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | Sneaky_Pete, I can give you a list of Endler's websites, but the main point is that Endler's enthusiasts and breeders will beg you not to mix them with guppies. The fact is they are feared to be extinct in the wild and wild strains won't be preserved if cross-breeding continues. They are absolutely gorgeous fish on their own, as are guppies. edit: the November issue of TFH has an excellent article by Armando Pou, a very well know collector of Endler's Last edited by Theresa_M at 24-Dec-2004 10:36 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
