I've heard many times that fancy guppies have a shortened life span, possibly due to inbreeding or linebreeding.

I have a male, green cobra that is going on 2.5 years. He looks like he is slowing down and his belly is perpetually large now (possibly fatty liver). I know he doesn't have infections or parasites and he has lived with the gut for at least 6 months. He gorges all day long and when I have no food in the tank, he snacks on algae - continuously. In the AM when he first awakes, he's pretty deflated. What makes me feel he is coming to his wintering days is that he lays on the gravel more often. I've attributed it to old age.

Is 2.5 years unusual or par for a fancy species like a green cobra?

"Cobra" is not as pretty any more. One of my white clouds has an affection for his tail fin.

I'd like to find more info on lifespan for these kinds. Common guppies are good for up to 5 years or more, but it is the fancy ones that supposedly have shorter lifespan. I've heard 1 year. Now that mine is about 2.5 years, I have to wonder. If he were to die tomorrow, would he have lived a reasonably long life for his species?

Anyone else have Green Cobra/Snakeskin for any length of time?

i think the max is 3-4 years with proper care
but i have found that cobras rnt the longest lasting guppies around

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L!!!!!!!! I hope he lives a long time!

I have heard a pretty large range. Anywhere from 1 1/2years all the way up to 3 1/2 for the fancy guppies. I have yet to see it myself though. Good luck!!
