I have had a male and a female swordtail for a while now. As long as I can remember, my female has had the characteristic black stomach from being pregnant. The thing that confuses me, is she has had the black spot since well before christmas. Is it possible that they will hold their eggs for as long as they please? Any ideas or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

they normally drop fry every 28-32 days. the black spot one some will stay for the rest of their lives.. the female swordtail can hold sperm from male suitors for up to 3 months as well..

either way the black may not ever go away, i have a molly that even though has not bred in well over 6 months (all my males were sold) she still has the characterisitic black triangle.

i don't believe its harmful to the fish, it just may not "look good"

hope that helped!

I have put past swordtails in the breeding net when they look about ready to have the fry. I had one in there for about a week and she never had the fry, and kept the black tummy. It was also her second time in there and I was told that they dont do very well after the first 'batch'.

how are you sure that it was her first batch?

pregnancy and labor for any animal is hard and can cause stress.. imagine having 5-25 fry every 30 days... i'd stress out too!

anyways.. im pretty sure your swordtail is okay... as long as they eat and act normal..
