I can keep females no problems and some babies that don't get eaten survive and do very well, my two mollies were two this year! but males just die randomly never lasting for more than a couple of months. Most of my babies are female with only one male guppy! I did get some European bred Black mollies from a different LFS and they are doing well so far and are breeding. I wondered if the males just get tired?? but every "single" male I buy - cos for example I wanted a white male molly or when I wanted a male platy, they have died in a couple of months! very odd? I have a male platy for 5 months now; he seems just fine while my 2 females had to go to fish heaven. Breeding within the “family” is probably a rather common thing. I would assume that there would be no major side effects within one generation, but I could imagine that it is not the best thing in the long run. Ingo |
