Gonopodium length??? | |

I saw this one male (wish I'd taken a picture now). He was 3/4 black...absolutely gorgeous...and his fin length is similar to everything in my tank... His gonopodium though was extremely long ...now I'm sure they come in all sorts and sizes but his was extremely long...It was from the normal placement to where his tail begins...This is the first time I've seen one this long ... So the question is...if I go back and get him (there are others like him without the gonopodium length) will he be able to breed, and in the breeding would this particular length pass on to subsequent fry? Ok thanks ahead of time ya'll....Heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |

If it appears very different from the others it may in fact be deformed and the fish may be unable to breed. But it might be fine. there is really no way to tell except get him and see if you end up with offspring with long gonopodiums. Have fun, Mike ps. It was difficult to reply to this without being a smartalec, but I did it. |

Usually these are sold in trios of two males and a female. The short gonopodium male for breeding and the long for looking at. I am not sure how the genetics work but I believe the female carries the trait(sex linked). max |
