Ok folks...I went to the lfs today and was looking at the guppies...I was thinking of adding 2-3 new ones, since my disaster is now over, and water quality is back to normal....

I saw this one male (wish I'd taken a picture now). He was 3/4 black...absolutely gorgeous...and his fin length is similar to everything in my tank...

His gonopodium though was extremely long ...now I'm sure they come in all sorts and sizes but his was extremely long...It was from the normal placement to where his tail begins...This is the first time I've seen one this long ...

So the question is...if I go back and get him (there are others like him without the gonopodium length) will he be able to breed, and in the breeding would this particular length pass on to subsequent fry?

Ok thanks ahead of time ya'll....Heidi

I'd say go get him and find out. If it appears very different from the others it may in fact be deformed and the fish may be unable to breed. But it might be fine. there is really no way to tell except get him and see if you end up with offspring with long gonopodiums.

Have fun, Mike

ps. It was difficult to reply to this without being a smartalec, but I did it.

No, this is an inherited trait. That male might or more probably might not be able to breed. Usually these are sold in trios of two males and a female. The short gonopodium male for breeding and the long for looking at. I am not sure how the genetics work but I believe the female carries the trait(sex linked).

Ok how do I politely put this awaits censors He does not seem to be having trouble with the mating chase, mating part of this...yet, I won't know if he is successful or not till I start seeing fry that look like him :%) I will give him this he is a ladiesman or at least is giving it all he's got
