Got some balloon mollies! | |
MegTheFish Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 | WoW. She had 12 fry!!! I know that they aren't from the white molly, because it takes awhile for the babies to be born. Most of them are orange/black. Very cute! I'm hoping I can find homes for them though... |

Every 60-70 days the female give birth to 10-60 young that are already approximately one-half inch long. an adult balloon sized molly can grow to 4" like mine have. |

labrakitty Fish Addict Posts: 740 Kudos: 435 Votes: 9 Registered: 12-Nov-2004 | Don't ever add any other fish, or put them in a community tank with other ifhs. I have 1 tiny balck balloon molly about 2cm big, and it torchered every other fish in the tank including 4cm guppies and platys, evene the bristle nsoe catfish I have. It nipped a sick platy till its tail was all zig zagged. It died... As for stocking, that might be ok, they can get up to 3", I have only ever seen one at about 2.5" at the biggest. Good Luck! |

MegTheFish Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 | Never mind I've already moved them. The tank has gravel so I'm gonna take that out today. So far I havn't seen them eat yet, but some of them are 'pooping' so I guess thats good. Today when my brother goes to get his budgie I'll look for a submersible 25 watt heater...there really hard to find around here though...] |

MegTheFish Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 | Okay, I was thinking, can I move the 12 babies (and I'm expecting more from my OTHER pregnat female) into a 3 gallon tank, it has a sponge filter. The only problem is there are 3 guppies in there so I will move them out, but the tank has no heater. I've been searching and I havn't found one small enough yet. I think I may be getting one tommorow though. Will the babies last a few days in temps around 68-72 degrees? Will they be able to live in this if I can't get a heater? I don't want to keep them in the breeder net since they'll stunt. I was hoping to move them tonight so please post quick!!! Thanks. |

MegTheFish Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 | I had an empty 5.5 gallon sitting around since the last fish died a few days ago, so I decided to add some fish. Actually theres an otto already in there. So I went down to my lfs and I was searching the tanks, I wanted to get some type of livebearer because I want to raise the fry. A few balloon mollies caught my eye. So I got 1 high-fin white balloon molly, 1 black balloon molly, 1 orange/white molly with black spots. They are just beautiful! I also got a heater for the tank (50 watts, that was all they had) I'm actually still adjusting them to the tank. I had to wait about a half an hour for the temp to be stable, so they had to wait in a 2 gallon bucket with an air stone for that time. I added about 1 cup of the tank water into the store water (in the bucket) every 10 minutes. They are now in a bag floating in the tank. They are sure crazy...I think they really want to get out. They are the cutest things though. There are 2 males and 1 female. Can I add 2 more females? |

MegTheFish Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 | 8 one inch neon tetras do not produce the same amount of waste as one 8 inch oscar. They oscar could not be kept in a ten gallon tank, while the neons can. And it's the same number of inches of fish. See my point? Yes, I've been told that *counts on fingers* 3 million times. I'm not stupid. Sorry if I sound rude, but who DOESN'T know that an 8 inch oscar produces more waste then 8 one inch neons? Anways, I'm going to add 1 more female so she doesn't get bugged to much. I'm also getting guppies for my 3 gallon today ^.^ |

terranova Fish Master Posts: 1984 Kudos: 1889 Votes: 229 Registered: 09-Jul-2003 | They may be one inch now, but they will certainly not stay that way. And the *gulp* "rule" is 1 inch of ADULT fish per gallon. That shouldn't even be a rule though... 8 one inch neon tetras do not produce the same amount of waste as one 8 inch oscar. fish1 Banned Posts: 1727 Kudos: 1910 Votes: 58 Registered: 09-May-2004 | I really wouldnt get any more mabey one at the most. The 1in per gallon rule really isnt the most reliable way to stock your tank. Ballon mollies or at least the ones i have had ben pretty hefty waste producers. 4 b.mollies would be fine imo in a 5gallon tank. I wouldnt put any more though |

MegTheFish Banned Posts: 167 Votes: 1 Registered: 03-Aug-2004 | Really? There each about 1 inch so if I went by the 1 inch rule then I don't think it would be crowed...but maybe you don't go by that rule with mollies? |

DonnieBoy Hobbyist Posts: 81 Kudos: 67 Votes: 0 Registered: 10-Nov-2004 | I like those balloon mollies too. I was thinking of adding some to my 55 community tank but not sure yet what route i am going to take... as to adding more to a 5.5 gallon? I'm not sure I'm kinda new to the hobby but it seems that it might get too crowded if you add any more. Don |
