Larger females=more males to mate with=large brood size+greater genetic diversity.

How many generations of inbreeding is required to "fix" a strain?

I'm not new to fish but new to guppies. Within a week of purchasing male and female guppies which were apparently ALWAYS kept in separate tanks I have a few fry. I know HOW to tell the male from the female but how long before I will be able to tell which of the fry are female and which are male ? They are about 3 weeks old and so far all have the exact same colouring as the females.

Hey NewBreeder16

I bought my first guppies at the weekend and they are gorgeous. I think they are all boys (by chance) so I'm wondering if they will be quite happy all boys together or whether I should think about getting some ladies in the near future. Is it a given that mixed bunch will breed? I'm probably not set up for breeding though so happy to leave them be if they will be happy. What does one need when nature takes it course?

Also in terms of compatability, are guppies compatable with Bettas. It doesn't say so on the profiles but I thought I'd ask the question. I'm wondering whether I could add a couple of female bettas and maybe eventually a male to my community tank.

thank you

Well kitten, two weeks is pretty good, i think, for him to do his "job". The females can play trix on you, they look prego one day not the next, just keep an i on her.
-NewBreeder16

Well SHAM you never know what will come out of that kind of mix. Some will have the color of their parents, and some will be a mix. This subject takes a long time to expirament on.
-NewBreeder16

Well CORY ADDICT the females are larger than the males because they carry the younge. the males only have to be pretty and do their "job". The females need the extra muscle.(i guess, i have not heard or read much on this subject, but that is the main idea)
-NewBreeder16

put your replies all in one post please.

Why aren't male guppies the same size as females?

Hey with the attention of a few knowledgeable guppy people on this thread it looks like a good spot to reask an unanswered question from the endler feeder thread.
What happens if I breed wild colored guppies to snakeskins? I have 1 male wild guppy and a few females then I bought snakeskins off aquabid but I think I got all females. I might also have 1 lyretail but it's too small to tell.

Hmm... more questions.

I let my male guppy loose with his sisters. How long before I can assume they've had their fun? I've seen him dancing for his harem, but haven't been able to catch them in the act. (Gee, makes me sound like I'm a voyeur.)

Also, it's been about two and a half weeks since I got the new guppies... one looks like it MIGHT be carrying, but I'm not sure. I'm assuming the two will probably wind up dropping fry at some point, but they were quite likely stressed out by the moving and such... how will that effect delivery? Of course, it's possibly that they're NOT pregnant, but I'm going to assume they are. I'm going to introduce the new girls in with the others when I remove the male. I don't want to make some weird cross strains... I think when they drop, they'll be a mixed enough batch as it is.

Just curious...

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~

Best if breeding, one male to two female.in a 5 gal. i'd just have six on that skale, but if only males you can have around 5-6 in a five.A ten gal. i would recamend not too many more.
-NewBreeder16

ps . mite be a bit to much on a 5 gal. filter
