I currently have a 20 gal with about 7 adult guppies and 5 neons. My problem is guppy fry overload... the tank was formally a turtle tank, and the turtle would eat all the fry and leave the adults alone because he was too small to eat them. Unfortunately, my little turtle has passed away , leaving many uneaten guppy fry. My question -- can anyone recommend a fish that will eat the guppy fry but leave the other fish alone? Some of them are eaten by the neons or other guppies, but it's not enough. The tank has a few live plants and is very well-filtered.

I don't think a rainbow shark would be good in that size of a tank. I say dwarf gourami, female betta, or some dwarf cichlid. Maybe even a smaller catfish...I don't know though, would a bumblebee catfish work in there? Not cories, they won't do anything IME

You could always just scoop them out and take to your LFS.

You'll have to call and ask. Different pet stores have different policies.

I think gouramis are good for fry control...and the females bettas as well. Must be something with those labyrinths...

PetSmart will take themplace them in their plant tank, and let them beOk that probably isn't the wisest way, check some Mom and Pop LFS's in your area they usually take them. Really get another tank to raise your fry in, then find an lfs that will give you credit.

I wouldn't go the way of the bettas. Female bettas will cause you trouble as soon as they get the taste of fresh meat. I know I gave Leslie some guppies, and she got some females to put in the tank also. All went well until the females dropped her fry, and then that was all folks. The females ate all the fry (exactly what you want done), but as soon as they were out of fry they went for the adults, and within a few days maybe 3 at most the guppies were gone also. So to put it mildly don't go the way of the female guppies unless you want to loose your adults also.

Raise the fry in another tank, and find someone to sale them back to...Best of luck--Heidi

I'll keep trying some of the LFS in my area, and I'll also double-check with PetSmart. I'm still kind of hoping I can give them away to some friends or something... thank for the info, michelle, I'll pass on the betta
