I purchased two real nice fancytail males and two fancytail females about a month ago. They remain exclusively at the top of the tank. The two females have passed on after getting rather dark in color? Males are doing fine. Do I need a higher ratio of females to males? They are housed with large goldfish but no problems with nipping at all. My goldfish are 5 years old.

Try to aim for 2 females to 1 male. THis means 1 female can have a rest whilst the other is resting.

Other issues to consider. Goldfish are widely documented as being poop machines, there waste is very high. This may effect your guppies / mess up the bio load.

The other thing is if you have babies they may not be able to handle the conditions with all that poop around. Also this may really over do your bio load further unless you get a fry tank

Also, goldfish are coldwater while guppies are tropical... Is your tank heated and what size is it?

One of my guppy girls died, too... not quite sure why. It's been suggested that maybe she was holding fry (she dropped some but perhaps not all...)

Thanks for the advice, I am going to move the guppies to a 30 gal tank soon as they will be in a heated enviorment.

Update, I have lost one of the males now so apparently this was not a good idea.

What's in the 30 gallon? Did you acclimate them when you moved them? What were the symptoms of the male's death?

Not sure what's going on, but it sounds a bit odd...
