I found my eldest female guppy floating; She was about two years old. The profile says the lifespan is one year, but I just wanted some input on that. How long do your guppies live?

Odd thing is that she looked perfectly healthy the other day and then POOF... no indications of why she died.

I separated male and female guppies when I found out that one of my supposedly all-female trio was quite obviously NOT female. She was YOUNG when I first got her (like, not even colored up yet) from my sister's boyfriend. She did have her first drop at a rather young age, and continued to have a couple more drops after that one, but since then she's been *cough* abstinent. So it's not like she was worn out from constantly giving birth (can that happen to these prolific fish? ).

Was it just her time? Or have the rising temps done her in? It's about 80 degrees in the tank, which I didn't think would be too much of a worry... she didn't have issues last year...

~Meow. Thus spoke the cat.~

Hi Kitten,
In my experience, disregarding any expected lifespans, I would say female guppies, whom definetly will outlive males, probably live an average of 1.5- 2 years.
Male guppies, because of their extreme elevated testosterone levels, live shorter lives, their max probably being around 1.5 years at most, and most not that long.
I think it is sort of like the same way a sexually active animal like a lion's life span is determined, the more active they are, the shorter their life is, (for male lions who have a pride of females, just a couple of years, bachelors can live as long as 25 yrs).

I think that the males live 1.5-2 & the females 2-2.5 years.

i don't know that giving birth often can cause perminant damage but i do know that they should be alowed to rest a few days after giving birth in a quarantine tank then reintroduced in to the tank

Kitten, just from experience I'd say that my guppies live on average of 2-3 years...

I know these 2 male brothers I had just passed away early this spring and I'd had them I want to say about 3 years or just a little less

My guppies live up to 2years but they are a pure h/b red strain which i have linebred for the past few years. Thus i think that "normal" guppies should live up to 3years
