If she has been alone for a couple of months and you just now introduced her to a male then she's not pregnant, or may have just gotten pregnant but it takes twenty some odd days for her to drop the fry. My female guppies stay pretty fat anyway and the only way I can tell that they are going to drop soon is if their bellies actually get a sqare-ish shape to them. The females always have a black "gravid" spot, this is one of the ways to tell males from females when they are juvenile. Let us know please how long you have had the female to get an acurate answer of whether or not she is indeed pregnant. Here is a pic of some younger female guppies on the day they dropped some fry..keep in mind they are still young and not fully grown.... Pregnant.... Not Pregnant... On average you can expect a female to drop fry about every 28 days. Even if the male is removed once she has been impregnated by him you can expect fry for about 6-9 months after removing him, because the female stores the sperm, and can drop fry each month from those stored. And Jamie is also right a young female can look pregnant if they are on the plump sidebut can start having fry at about 5 months of age...:%) This is a front view of one of my classes ladies who had babies within the next week of this picture being taken. Which I believe was her second drop of fry. Here is one view of another one of our classes ladies who dropped her first batch of fry that afternoon, her first batch with about 10 fry in total. And the same lady from the other side... Basically if they look as though they are ready to explode, and have been in a tank with males for sometime, you can expect them to be pregnant, because hey, that is what guppies do best:%) heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Or of course you can move them to a fry tank, the choice is yours...heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |
