I am thinking of setting up a guppy tank for my kids, how many would go into a 10 gallon safely? Also, are they a real pain with having fry all the time? I don't want to get into selling them, etc. Also, what can co-exist with them?

You could get 3 male guppies and a school (6) of small cories. That is if you don't want babies. Otherwise, you should have a ratio of 1 male to 2 females. The males are prettier, so you might want to just get males. If you want just guppies, you could get 5 or so. Shrimp and snails are good tankmates if you don't want fish. It really depends on what you want.

i think that you can get more than 5. Also my female guppies don't have as big of tail as my male, but they are gorgeous

Yes just get males or females, or you will be over run by fry.

Cories should be kept in schools, so you should get at least 6. I wouldn't get more than 5 guppies because of the inevitable fry. That is, if you decide to get females too.

Want some of my fry?

If you don't want to be overrun by fry, you need to either get just males (females are most likely pregnant in the LFS) or get what I like to refer to as population control. I have my adult female guppy, the females of several generations of fry and the lovingly dubbed Terrible Trio, my three golden zebra danios. ...the Trio gets live food once a month until Miss Glory finally stops having fry. *rolls eyes* The father was moved several months ago... male fry are moved once they're easily sexed.

I started with three young guppies; I was told they were all females. One very male guppy and several generations of fry later, I have one rather overstocked ten gallon. My sister has been taking the male guppies, but she says "enough" now... this is NOT good... I think I still have at least one more male... eek!

At a rough guess, I have the one first gen female (one of the mothers died), six second gen females and easily 12+ females from the following generations. I can't count them, as they always move so bloody fast. *wry grin*

If I didn't have the danios, I'd have six times the fry. And to think, I deliberately SAVED the first batch, thinking they'd never survive in my tank if I didn't. The resulting generations came about because the danios were loaned to my sister to cycle her tank... and I found out the hard way that my guppy parents didn't seem interested in eating their fry. *sigh*

So... want any of my guppy babies?

A lot of stores have the male and females guppies in seperate tanks. So, buying and keeping just males will be no problem. If you want just guppies in this tank, I'd go with 8 males. That will look great plus it will be a safely stocked tank.

Since it's a tank for your kids and you're concerned about fry I'd definitely go with just males. Bottom feeders aren't a necessity and not having any allows you room for more guppies. You could always get a small snail and/or some shrimp for the tank as well.

With good filtration and regular water changes I'd say 8 males would be fine.

I like everyones suggestions! 8 male guppies would look sweet in a tank.
Another Idea is how about doing 4 male guppies, 6 neon tetras, and a hillstream/ butterfly loach? Then you would have the guppies to keep the top and bottom clean, the neons to occupy the center, and a hillstream loach is really cool to look at and will keep in check any algae problems that arise!
Heres a pic of a hillstream loach in case you dont have any idea what im talking about ...common names pfft
