When it is said that mollies like brackish water, exactly what does that mean? I know all LB's can benefit from some salt in the water. So, what is enough for mollies? I read somewhere it is 1 tbs or tsp per 5 gallon. Is the right amount of salt for mollies too much salt for other LB's. I have two black female preg mollies and one black and white spotted male in a tank with three male guppies.
Thanks in advance!

ladiejl,

IMHO, the answer is – it depends.

Mollies can live in a broad range of water conditions. They live ok in absolutely salt-less water and they are used as marine feeder fish because they can survive in a salt tank as well (at least for a while, unlike guppies).

What is the current salt condition in your tank? How long are the mollies in there already?

I would say that if they are happy then leave it like it is. If not, gradually (over at least 2 weeks) increase the salinity to the point where the other fish are still happy.

Hope this helps,

Ingo

I have about 3 tbs in there. They have just been in there since late Saturday night. They seem to be fine. They are very pregnant and evn so spend little time hiding. Yesterday they and the gups where nipping at the top so I added a long bubble bar and took out some water so the water from the filter would cause more movement when it came out into the tank. They stopped the nipping so this morning I added the water back. Alls going well but I did have one guppy just konk out and die. Literally. I wont add more salt. If its going good dont fix it, right? I just mistook what I read about they to mean they HAD to have lots of salt to survive. Thanks a bunch!

That's good,

Any idea why the Guppy died? Also, how big is your tank anyway?

Don't increase the current too much as it might flush the future baby Mollies around like in a washing machine .

No idea why the guppy died. The tank is a 10 gal. I dlove to get a bigger one but I dont have any where to put a bigger one nor do I have the money to buy a bigger one. Here you can buy a 10 gal with the hood, food, filter for $28.00. The others go way up from that. I feel like a dweeb for having 10 gal tanks. The others are still doing fine. I hope I can ctach her right as she starts having them so I can put her in a breeder net and then more the fry to my other 10 gal with just has 3 small cherry barbs.
