I think we've had babies... | |
Gromit Hobbyist Posts: 71 Kudos: 59 Votes: 1 Registered: 04-Feb-2005 | When we first got our platies (1 male & 2 females in early December) one of the females was larger and that's how we told them apart. Then they were about the same size, and now one is much smaller again. At no time did she appear pregnant, but then I've only every seen pregnant guppies (and that was 20 years ago). Today my partner was fairly sure he saw a little one. Certainly explains a few things (doh). At this late stage, what are chances of any of the fry surviving? Also, how obviously pregnant will a platy get? |

Most fry just hide there till they are bigger. Congratulations & Goodluck. http://www.deathbydyeing.org/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

I found that my adult platies were not particularly good at eating their own fry. Eventually, the problem comes that you have to decide what to do with all the fry! I bought some angelfish and they know what to do with all the fry! |

I don't know what sort of plant I've got, but the idea of floating it so they can get the food that's caught in it is good. I'll try the ziplock crush too, probably much better than the crumbing I do between my fingers at present. The worst thing about them having places to hide is that I've only seen one, once. I sit here typing, glancing at the tape hoping to see a quick dart. |

I have a picture on the home computer I'll post later this evening, it has 4 fry in it, and unless you know where, you won't find them. This one was taken last night, and the fry pictured are between 2-4 wks old...(I tend to have fry about once a week, with the timing of my females these days.) Best of luck, and don't worry, they will be fine...and in 28-32 days you will have more...The first few batches of fry a female has are smaller in number, the older she is, the more she has...Heidi heidi attached this image: "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Guess I just have to be a bit more careful when I do the vac & water change on Saturday. I was supposed to be doing the back of the tank (which is where all the hiding places are), but I might do the front instead. |
