I'm trying to make sure I have a good male:female ratio for my new tank (Guppies of course) But I'm having a hard time being able to tell the genders apart.

I know males have the modified fin, the gonopodium, but I have no idea how to tell it apart from the normal anal fin. I've also heard conflicting opinions about whether the males or females are larger. Ack!

(EDIT: I'm just realizing now that I should probably have this in Livebearers Lane. Sorry. @.@)

The normal, female anal fin looks triangular, like a, well, fin.

The gonopodium looks like a tube, or rather like a folded up fin.

Males usually have larger tail fins and have brighter colors. Body size, the female will be larger, but you might have younger guppies, so the bodies will be fairly similar.

Many thanks from a silly small fry! I'll be getting the new guppies within the next few days.

The gravid spot is another good way to tell. If you see a dark area inside the fish just in front of the anal fin it is a female.

Have fun, Mike

The gravid spot doesn't always work as some livebearers have blotches all over their body, and they may just have one at that spot. Also, some livebearers have black bodies (such as half black guppies) and that cannot be seen. The only true way to tell is by the anal fin: triangular for a female, tubular for a male.

Heres a pair of pics to help you

Female Guppy
Male Guppy Note on the male guppy, where the normal big rounded anal fin is on the female, a Male has a backwards pointing fin in the shape of a tube
Hope this helps!
