Livebearer Nursery Design | |

Basically, it's a variation on the one illustrated in the old Innes book. For the likes of Guppies and Platies, a 5 gallon aquarium can be used for the purpose - for Swordtails and Mollies, press a 10 gallon or (even a 15 ofr a female velifera Molly) into service. Basically, use some plastic sheeting to create the V shape in the diagram below - clear perspex cut to size. Support it in place using some suitably chosen plastic supports - suction cups for heaters, or Lego bricks silicone glued into place, are good choices of support here. The idea is to leave a gap through which the fry can escape, but through which Momma cannot follow. I've modified the setup so that an air stone (or an air driven sponge filter) can be inserted into the 'maternity ward' to keep the aquarium filtered. Add some plants such as Hornwort to help keep Momma nice and relaxed, and to give the fry a sporting chance at escape. Feel free to save the illustration below to your hard drive for future reference. A DIY nursery that will be a LOT less stressful than a plastic breeding trap with only a 1/2 litre holding capacity! |
