I'd go with Guppies. The colors of the males are great. They live shorter lives than Platies and Swordtails, but if you can save some fry(there will be fry) your tank will go on forever.

No they are not e to fin rot. They just may seem to be more noticable due to their longer fins. By keeping your fish in clean water, no excessive nitrogen, and keeping up with routine water changes, you SHOULD NOT have problems with fin rot.

if they do get finrot u have to treat em or take care of your tank more.

my guppies had finrot once, i put medicine in and the gupppies are still here nice and happy swimming around.

good luck with the guppies.

When I kept mine, I only used fake plants. It all depends on if you want to save your fry. If so, take one of your fake plants, take the plastic thing off of the bottom, and just let it float on the top of the water. The fry will hide right in there.
If you only want the strongest, leave the tank as is, and the strongest fry will find ways to survive.
If you don't care about the fry, leave as is, as well.
I will also go with the 2-3 year lifespan.

I use floating hornwort, anacharis, water wisteria, and java moss for fry to hide in.

They will live up to 2-3 years, the fancier they are, the shorter they'll live. If you want your fry to live, hiding spots or denseley planted areas will help. If you just want 1 plant or so, and don't want to worry about trimming it, lighting, co2, etc. consider java moss. it is VERY helpful and fry often hide in it. And since its a clump (unless u attatch it onto something), adults can't really get into it. Aside from platies, swordtails, and guppies, may i suggest Endlers? They are somewhat hard to find however, and you will need female and males to breed. Females are quite hard to find, because they are pretty much colorless. Endlers are small though, and most of the time they don't eat their fry.

Thanks, I think I'll go with Guppies.

BTW:

Should I put some real plants (right now, all I have is fake) in the tank if I want my fry to survive, or should they be fine.

How long can I expect to see a guppy live (the profile says 1 yr., but checking to get 2-3 opinions)?

Thanks in advance![/font]

Go with guppies. They are colorful, active, VERY easy to keep, super easy to breed, and have great personalities!
Also, if you do well by your tank, they live a long time.

Guppy's I like there big tails and they don't get very big. (I don't think) Swordtails get around 5 inches or 4 inches. They get rather large

I like the personality and colors of platies. They also seem rather hardy. IME they tend to eat their fry though, unless there are lots of hiding places (floating plants).

edit: I think swordtails would get too large for a 10g

Should I go with Platies, Guppies, or Swordtails (based on longlivity and color)?

Thanks!

Frankly, my vote would be platys.... I have both platys and guppies in my community tank - And frankly, I get more enjoyment out of the platys --- I think it might be their size.... And I agree with another member, the blue and white platys are GORGEOUS! I have 2 and they are definitely some of my favorite fish! (One is the mother of my fry in the 20 gal tank!) Another beautiful platy would be the sunset variatus (I have both high fin and "regular" - They are simply STUNNING!

I have kept guppies for years, and not once have I had a case of finrot...I have only seen it once, and it was on my female betta about a year back.
Go for the guppies, you know you want to!

Yeah, I would have to add my vote for Platies... I picked up 4 in all different colors and the fry are beautiful. My favorite are the mickey mouse platies, I have a yellow mickey mouse female and we've had a few fry that look like her. Anyhow, I think they are very personable and fun to watch. Also, I've found that hornwort is perfect for giving your fry cover. HTH.
