I'll wait to find some good-looking females, im really not in a hurry. The nearest pet stores with good selections are one and a half hours away. I am not quite sure what I am going to do with the tank, but I definatly want some guppies. In order to avoid fights and ripped tails, I will get the guys some pretty females. I just hope the fry won't get out of hand...

I have a tank of only male guppies but they've been raised that way since birth. They are very peaceful with each other and constaly try to... uh.. "mate" with one another. Hehe. But Callatya is right there is a danger of males fighting and causing a problem with nipped fins. Just watch for that.. it's all about each fish and his temperment.

Well I no one asked about their psychological problems

" but you have to get twice as many of the gray, drab females from the next tank"

I've seen a lot of those gray drab females but I shopped around to my lfs and I found some of the most beautiful females I've ever seen. Half the body is black with a black/yellow spotted tail alomst like a snake skin pattern. I had some that weren't so pretty but they had died of fungus after having fry (long story). Now my beautiful guppy has just given birth to over 50 fry. I'm going to keep the prettiest of the bunch and take the rest to my lfs.

My local fish stores also keep the males in the same tank and females seperate. As long as the tank is big enough and you have some plants for them to hang out around they should get along fine (for the most part). If you have 12 females mixed in with the males, be prepared to have over 600+ fry after a month or two.

Edit: All of my guppies LOVE the current out of the filter and spend a lot of time hanging out and swimming through it!

They spend all day flirting with eachother...? Right.... Anyways, i've never had problems keeping all males together. Why would they attack each other Women...can't live with them, can't live without em. :88)

I have 60 males in a tank together that is well planted and has rocks etc. They spend all day flirting with each other and they love the fast current from my internal filter.

There are no deaths by injury/fighting and only occasionally I see a slightly tatty end on a tail but that is rare.

The biggest problem I have is at feeding time when there is this huge mass of fish all bunched on top of each other waiting for that first pinch of food to land

"they only put males with males at my lfs"

That's what I was thinking. I can only remember the 3 stores I've been in recently, but the males were together without any females. Unless the females where as colorful as the males, and I couldn't tell the difference.

Im not sure what im going to do exactly, i might reduce the total of guppies and add a pair of dwarf gouramis and maybe even a school of cories. Fish keeping is not a good hobby for someone as indesisive as I am

there are some that you could just get two of, and they could eat the guppy fry.
every think of a tank of all guppies and two females of something else?
just make sure they are the type who wont nip at your guppy fins (i made that mistake!)

Is it possible for a group of male guppies (15+) to live peacefully together? I have heard a lot of differing opinions and I am hesitant to try. I really want to keep guppies, but I dont want multitudes of fry. They will be in a 29 gallon with no other fish.
Also, do they mind a slightly strong current that my penguin 330 creates?

I have 3 males guppys and they get on great. I did have 4 but one died. Not from any aggression from the others. Orginally I had 2 at the start and those 2 did not get on. 1 killed the other. I keep trying untill I now have 3 that get on.I had 3 that died unknown causes and 2 died from jumping out of the tank, and 2 were found dead 1/2 eaten.

I noticed, "gray, drab females".... Recently I purchased some females having similar colorization to their male counterparts.... Makes quite a spectacular attraction in my tank! ... So, I can only suggest that when you begin to buy your 12 females - shop around! You don't have to settle for gray and drab....

thats fine. it really depends on the temperament of the guppies. I once had a male who used to sit at the bottom whenever i took the female out

Yeah, i have a little stumpy thing that I will have to take out. Other than that there are not many other hiding places. Would 6 males and 12 females be ok as the final total? There always has to be a catch to something : "sure you can have a few pretty males for your tank, but you have to get twice as many of the gray, drab females from the next tank" I might try a few males alone, I could get lucky.

It is possible, but if your tank doesn't have alot of hidey places, any fry produced if you keeped a correct ratio of males to females (say 1:3) would most likely be eaten.

Mine fight all the time. They recently got in a fight and had both their tails reduced to 1/2 their regular size. I only have two. They don't have any females in the tank.

You could try it, but I wouldn't risk it.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

Good, some people make them sound like little terrors without thier gals to occupy them. But what about the current? They don't look like they could take much, especially the really long tailed ones...

they will establish a pecking order and you might ge a few nipped tails, but yes, it is possible

For animals, the entire universe has been neatly divided into things to (a) mate with, (b) eat, (c) run away from, and (d) rocks. - Terry Pratchett
