bruce Fingerling Posts: 40 Kudos: 34 Votes: 0 Registered: 07-Feb-2005 | I read somewhere that mollies and guppies can breed. Is this true? REALLY? and if so could swordtails and guppies, or all livebearers for that matter. I was just curious.. |

T/A Mega Fish Posts: 942 Kudos: 1796 Registered: 20-Feb-2004 | Platies and Swordtails can interbreed. Guppies, Endler's, and Mollies can interbreed. But that's all. Platies and Swordtails cannot breed with Guppies, Endler's or Mollies. |

The only way different species of livebearers can successfully reproduce with each other is if they belong to the same genus. But, as expected, there are some exceptions. Differences between species even of the same genus can be so great that the fish will be unable to produce viable offspring with each other. That is usually true for guppies and mollies, because hybridizing between those two species is rare and when it does happen, most of the young do not survive for long.
