It's a common myth. Mollys do not require salt. Most Mollys have never seen salt. Most if not all the Mollys that inhabit the streams and rivers of Central America will live out their lives without ever venturing into brackish water. Many actually believe it is the hardness of the water which Mollys prefer.

The key thing Mollys require is clean water. Well aerated, well circulated, clean water with lots of swimming room.

it's just good to add salt to the tank as a cleaner whenever you do a water change.

They don't really need salt, but they do seem to enjoy a little salt in the water. My molly was looking bad so i put her in a tank with about 2 tsp/10 gal and now there's a whole tank full of them. also, they like 80 degree water. just a word about salt in the tank, though, some other fish species don't appreciate it.
