Ok I went to my room to feed my fish and as I was feeding my platy a fry shot out from its hiding spot grabed some food then shot right back down. I was so stunned to see the little fry I just stood there staring at my tank anyways after I regained my sences I started looking around the bottom of the tank and found 5 fry. I took them out and put them in there own tanke then when I went back to the tank I had the mom in she had another one so I have a total of 6 fry. Since then she hasn't had any more fry is she doneHow many do they have at a time and how long does it take

Congratulations

Welcome, to the joys of livebearers

The first batch of fry can be as small as 2-3 fry and as large as 20, in some cases. These fry could be a few days old if they are already swimming that well, and she may be finished having them, but sometimes it can take a day or so to drop all of the fry. I do know from my own experiences, that newborn fry don't really "swim" as much as dart and hover from place to place, so by your description I'd say they are about 3 days old probably

Congratulations on your fry, just keep in mind that you will now be having them every 28-32 days (roughly), until you go totally insane:%)But, even after as many fry as I've had (rather my fish have had) it still makes me smile and grin, though sometimes as kitten can aclaim to, I've groaned quite loudly Also, keep in mind as the female gets older the number of fry do tend to increase

Enjoy heidi

Hi well as of right now I have a total of 13 and I know there not 3 days old. I think what I saw was a fry right after it was born swim to the surface and fill it's swim bladder. Since my female was down at the bottom of the tank when I saw the fry swim out of nowhere this makes more since b/c I only saw 1 fry do it. Now that there all in there own tank thay are not swiming around and mostly staying at the bottom of the tank. How long will they do thisMy female platy has been having them all day I even got to watch her have one
I'm so happy i've only had this female since 11-3-05 she was more or less a rescue from WAL*MART and stole my heart I was pritty sure she was pegnant but I didn't think she was ready to have them since she wan't boxy at all but really round.

If anybodys wondering she is a little under 1.5" has orange-red head&tail, shimer blue mid body(it starts just after the head and ends a little befor the tail), bottom fins clear, top fin (not sure of the proper name)clear and black, tail starts out orange-red then black and then clear. When and if I ever learn how to post pics I well get you one of her though I don't think the blue will show up sence you can only see it when she moves just right in the light.

If anybody has information or tips on how to rais the fry fill free to let me know. At the moment I have two 3 week old platy fry that I got when they were only 1 week old. So the 2 weeks i've had with them is the only experience I have with platy fry so all take all the help people are willing to give.

That's Awesome!! I was away when my rainbow platy had fry so I wasn;t able to catch it in time. There was one left when I got home so I went out and bought "a cup"... and it was too late. I posted something on it that day.. i was very sad. I am thinking that she is pregnant again though.. doing some strange things lately, and looks bigger than normal. . . i am keeping an eye on her this time. . .

someone told me that it can take as long as 9 hours to fully release all the fry.. IME it usually takes about a day. i'd say overnight.. and she should be done.

Platys can have more than 20 fry at a time, one of my older girls was looking very pregnant so i caught her and put her in a breeding trap. about half an hour leter she started giving birth and i was in absolute shock as to how many came out!!!, There was just under 50!!!! they are all now happy and well in another tank (80 litre) i haven't saved any others since then (my puffers always eat them within half an hour of birth).
But these guys will be big enough to be sold on in about a week and then i can start all over again!

The Momma fish looks just like my platy that has been acting a little odd. Just out of curiosity.. do you have a pic of the remaining fry??

The fry are to small for my to get a good pic of them on my camera phone, but I am going to try and barrow my moms digital camera and see if I can get a pic of them on it. All 13 are still alive and doing well and eating like crazy
