The adult sunset yellow Platies were born and raised in one of my old community 10 gallon setups. They are about 13 months old now.
I've been waiting quite awhile for them to start producing some fry of there own. And on Sunday morning I spotted at least 3 fry.

Today, I was only able to find 1, which actually bothers me. I really would like to raise about 5 of the new fry. And I would have liked to keep them in the 25 gallon community tank. I have plenty of fake plants in the tank and I also have a decent amount of floating fake plants. I figured that would have been good enough for a few to survive, but it's not looking so good now.

I've just setup an bare 10 gallon tank with a sponge filter and heater. If I can actually catch some of the fry, I will move them into that 10 gallon. I will them add some seeded bio media just to be safe.

Can anyone give me some tips on netting the fry.
They are so quick, I can't even imagine how hard this is going to be. Plus, I'm worried that while I'm chasing the fry around, the other fish will get an easy snack.

Today I couldn't find any fry in the tank. So I no longer need help with catching the fry.

I still would like to raise some of their young. So after thinking about it for awhile, I decided to just move the 2 adult females into the 10 gallon.
I added enough fake floating plants to cover about 1/3 of the surface. If any fry are released, they shouldn't have a problem finding the protection.
From the looks of the one female, she should be releasing within 2 days.
As soon as I spot some fry in the 10 gallon, the adults will be moved back to the 25 gallon. Then I want have to worry about losing any more fry to adult fish.

when you say "I've been waiting quite awhile for them to start producing" does that mean, you've been waiting for your fish to interbreed? to me it sounds like all the fish are from the same "litter" if you will, and they've just become of age and started breeding... either way, its not a good idea to keep fish that could possibly interbreed, there are alot of health and genetic defects that could occur from this. good luck with your future fry, and congrats on being a grandpa for a day.

This tip is for your next breeding.

I think that it's better to remove the adult, than catching the fry & remember to have lots of floating plants, for the fry to hide in.

Yes my yellow platies are brother and sisters and are almost 13 months old now. Their parents were not from the same family. The male was a solid red and the female was a blue wagtail.

I thought interbreeding was perfectly fine for the first couple generations?
This would only be the first generation that I'm working with right now.

jasonpisani, I realize that now. As I mentioned in my second post, I now have the females in the 10 gallon by themselves. I also just added some Willow Moss and Hornwort to this tank.

Hopefully I have everything covered and some fry will soon be appearing.
Any more suggestions, just let me hear them.

T/A,

I agree, interbreeding is fine for a few generations at least, how else would all these beautiful strands of guppies, platies, mollies, and what not be created. Well - I know there is more to breeding than just that, but good enough for me.
