My Sailfin mollies I purchased about 3-4 months ago. They really seem to "love" each other. However, the female still hasnt gotten pregnant. I see no sign of a gravid spot darkening, despite all the "love" they give each other. Is this normal? Is it possible one of these fish is sterile? I sure wish for baby mollies but Im not seeing this to be a likely event as the female doesnt get pregnant. Any ideas?

You won't see a gravid spot on a Molly. Even white Mollies don't show a gravid spot though you can sometimes spot the cluster of eggs or fry if she is lit from the back.

Keep alot of plants in the tank and relax for another month.

Good luck, Mike

are your mollies "mature", they might still be young, and not old enought yet.

I believe they are adults. They are both around a solid 3 inches in length. I purchased them as a pair at this size.
I have had them for 4 months or so, and they have both filled out and the female has gotten plumper. I watch the fish for a couple hours every day and keep an eye on the female, but no sign of labor impending or babies being born.

Mollys dont always get huge when they are pregnant. It is very possible they are having babies and eating them with out you even knowing it. Are there other fish in the tank? That would make it even more likely. If you really want to save fry, I would put the female in her own tank with lots of plants for the fry to hide in. Then you just wait until some appear. Its also possible(rare) that your male is sterile. You could try getting a new male and see if that helps. Just dont keep two males together. Once they get settled into a tank males tend to fight pretty badly. Same with swordtails.

Hi,
Yes they are in my 90g tank with an assortment or plethora of other fish you could say
I have been wondering myself whether or not the fry have been being eaten, as I havent seen one at all! I know my angelfish in particular loves to snack on fry, as do my rainbowfish and buenos aires tetras.
I dont know what else to do with her. I have a 25g with guppys and platys, I could put her in there for awhile and see if she has her babies. Or I have a 10g with fry and one pregnant female guppy who is due any day. I am afraid to put her in here as a nursery for her as I am sure she would eat any guppy fry that are born in the next week or so. I dont want that to happen. I dont suppose I could put a divider in the 10 and keep her in 1 side for awhile and see if she produces any fry. That is only 5 g for a 3 inch fish....I just dont know what to do.
Suggestions on this dilemma?
I would love to get my sailfins just a tank of their own, but the place I am renting is only 900 sq ft suite and with my 90 down one wall, smack dab beside my 25 and the 10 on the other wall beside the tv, I dont know where else I would put a tank large enough for sailfins. I would probably want to get them a 33 for themselves at least, or a 55 for them and up the numbers of sailfins to 2 males and 5 females. Ahhhh the dilemmas of fishkeeping!!!!
I also am iffy to put the sailfins in with the platys and guppys as I had 2 platys in my 90g temporarily (trying to line breed a hi fin sunburst variety) and the male molly kept having "relations" with the female platy! I dont want that!
*sigh* what to do , what to do?
