Never leave your guppies along and you go on holidays...! | |
Forever-mango Fish Addict Posts: 611 Kudos: 586 Votes: 35 Registered: 01-Dec-2003 | Why you must say? I just came back from my 1 month holiday to Hong Kong and Japan, and guess what I found in my tanks? My fry tank had grown up guppies and many fry. Same as my 2ft display! My dad has been taking care of them for me while I was away and I have to come home to see my tanks gathered with lots of guppies. Big ones and small ones, you name it... |

I have the same problem for now...and until someone comes up with birthcontrol for livebearers, you will be among friends of the same problem....:%) "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Get a catfish whose mouth is too small to eat the full size guppies, but large enought to eat the babies. Try one of the Rapheals. You will have no problems controling the population this way. Or get a small cichlid, like a shell dweller, or an Apisto, these will also do the trick. There is always a bigger fish... |

Mr Fish Addict Posts: 573 Kudos: 304 Votes: 0 Registered: 17-Jul-2003 | Well I once had a massive female guppy. Her first brood was 60 babies, she then grew to 4 inches, she then had 70 babies, and finally 80 babies. That was about six years ago and I had no room left. Then in a more recent event ( that I am still recovering from ) I had at least one female a day give birth and as a result I had over 200 fry. Then the tanks couldn't handle it. The females I had caught all the babies caused a disease in the tank and the babies that were in the main tank caused a skyrocket in ammonia. I saved about 20 in total. Now I am in the stages of rebuilding a colony. |

There was a second burst of babies and now they are everywhere. Today I just moved them up to a 15 gal from a 10 gal and all are doing well. I have bought 4 males and 4 females to add colour variation. |
