I've heard that ottos are very bad to have with livebearers. But till now, I thought they were very placid, timid catfish.

Are they really that bad?

Maybe I've heard about "Attack Ottos".

The senario was in a LFS where the Ottos probably were under-fed and were feeding off the slime coat of their tankmates?

I'm planning on adding a trio (1 female, 2 males) to my 10 gal. when it's done with it's cleaning (i'm doing a complete gravel vac and doing at least a 75% water change). Should this be ok, or should I have 2 females and 1 male?

Thanks A LOT!!!!!

I have 2 ottos in with 3 platies and have had no problems. Of all the posts I've read here, I've never heard anyone recommend against mixing ottos and platies. Most people (I think) would recommend 2f/1m ratio.

About your "Attack of the Ottos", ottos have been seen sucking on the slime coat of many fish, discus is one of the most attacked compared to other fish, not just livebearers. As for your trio, if you are adding guppies, i'd say 1 male, 2 females, that one female won't get stressed out by a certain male trying to impregnate her (), in your case two. This may lead to death of the female, that's why if you have two females and 1 male, the chasing is split between both females.

I have 6 otos with my platy fry and everyone gets along swimmingly. Everyone recommends the ratio as being 1m/2f but I have 2m/1f mollys and the males don't bother with the female at all. Hmm........

Nope, ottos. Sometimes they are known to suck the slime coat of fish. Luckily, this isn't common at all

Otos are vegetarian, they would not eat slime coats or fish fry. Slime coats are a protein byproduct.

My Oto doesn't pay the guppy fry in my 10 gal the slightest attention.

Pretty much any other algae eater you buy will chomp on your fry.
