I'm interested in getting about 4-5 platies and a dwarf gourami (to keep the amount of fry down) How often to females have fry? and also how much do they have at a time? If I keep the fry in the tank with the parents and dwarf gourami, how much fry would I probably have? Thanks.

Ally

Platies have fry every 4-5 weeks. The average number of fry ranges from 5-20. Of course, there is a lot of variation between individuals and each pregnancy.

Don't expect a lot of fry to survive. The number that will depends on several factors, with the biggest being hiding spaces. Are there plants or caves? Also, is your gravel small or large?
Another factor is your tank size.

One other thing to keep in mind, as the female gets older, she will have more fry with each batch of fry that she has...meaning her first batch of fry may have only 5, but by the end of the year she could be having as many as 50 fry at a time...just thought you would like the warning, for highest survival make sure that your tank is well planted. I really like using java moss for the fry...Best of luck, Heidi
