I was hoping someone was able to let me know what to look for when a Platty has Fry? i bought to Plattys and within two weeks i had 15 babies. i have them in a tank by them selves but my Mamma Platty looks like she is about to burst again. and if anyone knows how long after they have a batch will she have the next. i was told approx. 36 days but my fry are only 3 weeks old.

I think they can store sperm for 7 months, she will get fat and then have her fry every month.

When she is about to have more fry, she will become pregnant again. You'll be able to tell, because she will be much larger than usual.

Roberta and welcome !!

Your platy will look almost like she's "ready to burst" when she's about to have fry. Also, she will look almost squarish - like she's flat on the underside. Sometimes they even look like they are "waddling" when they swim.

I've found characteristics vary by the fish. I've had some that will hide while others show no signs of being pregnant at all.

One thing ALL of my platys have done right before they give birth is swim rapidly up and down the side of the tank. :%) Oh and most of the time, they have the fry in the weeeee hours of the morning (like 2AM).

Good luck. Oh and by the way... great name.

how can i tell if my platys are pregnant? 2 of my female platys have big bellys and when i feed them they look like they are going to pop, after a while their belly goes back down a little bit but they still have a fat belly. is it because im feeding them too much or are they pregnant? i got 1 male platy and 4 female platys, the funny thing is that one of the female platys is red with black fins and the yellow male chaises her around the thank and wont let her come close to the other yellow platys. is it because shes a differnt color?

From what i have been told about these Plattys. when they are going to have babies their belly will square off also they will have a black spot under the belly which is the the fry's eye's. when i first bought my platty;s i had them a couple of weeks and said to my husband my fish is getting fat the next thing i new there was a bunch of fry in the tank.I have two plattys in my 55 gallon myself and one looks like if is about to burst i am afraid to even feed her because of it. i mean i do feed her but i get afraid that she is going to explode. I have my Platty in a breeders net that way my other fish do not eat the fry just in case she is pregnant.I will be going a water change on my tank today to see if i can bring my nitrates down because if the water is not good i hear they will not drop the fry. If your platy does have some fry they are to cute i watch mine everyday. they are 32 days old today. well good luck
