Hi,

I could go on and on in explaining why I have a certain setup in
my 29G but I don’t want to bore you to death. So I will just describe it:

It is pretty well planted, has a hang-on filter on the back,
left hand side, with the heater right next to it.

Now, if you are wondering why this is in the livebearer section,
here it comes:

I have 9 3-weeks old Platy fry that have been in a net breeder and
that I moved now into a bigger enclosure. I took a tank divider and
bent it so it corners off the left front of the tank (area like a 1/4 of a pizza ).
The filtered water is flowing against the divider.

This section contains some ludwigias and some water movement
can be seen on its surface area. Nevertheless, as a concerned fish
daddy, I wonder if the lower regions could become stale, I observed
the flake food falling straight down in some spots.

I am thinking of adding the smallest possible air pump with air stone
into it, all the way at the corner of the enclosed section. Somewhere I
heard that air and planted doesn’t mix if there is no CO2 injected as well.

What do you think? Any other ideas (no, I can’t get a small tank at this time)?

Thanks in advance,

Ingo

well ingo it sounds like things are going well with the little guys right now...is there a particular reason why you have them sectioned off? Like are the adults also in the tank?

I have had more than my share of practice raising and breeding guppies and platties...

I tend to just let them swim around the tank with the rest of the adults...give them a goodly section that is planted and with some plants still floating about above them (I like Anacharis, but that is just me)

If you wish to keep them in the enclosure, it is fine...go get yourself and the fishies a bubble stone (one of the long ones) and a small pump and add the airstone to the tank...it won't harm your plants, if you already have them growing nicely you should be fine...

best of luck, and enjoy both your plants and fry, heidi

Heidi,

Thanks for your response. The reason why they are sectioned off is not only
that their mother (probably not the father though) is still in the tank, but that
it is my only tank with 7 zebra danios, 2 neon tetras, and 3 adult platies.

As my name implies, I am pretty new to the aquarium scene, and the platies
are in the tank for their 2nd pregnancy. The first time around (one day after
I got them) all babies were snatched up by the danios :#( . Basically I am scared
now to release them into the wild to early. They are so innocent and sooooo
many dangers are out there in this big tank, including the filter intake.

I cannot put a mesh over the filter intake because I will go away for some days
and someone will come over and feed my fish. But no cleaning action would
be performed and the filter mesh could get clogged up.

Thanks again for your support,

Ingo

My daughter has her platy fry in with the adults too. She has java moss planted and they hide in there. Raised quite a few sunsets that way.
