Two Tanks![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Big Fish Posts: 449 Kudos: 328 Votes: 13 Registered: 02-Jun-2003 ![]() ![]() | I recently added four platys to my twenty-nine gallon "danio tank" to give it a little extra color and interest. I have one male to three females. One of the females is a different color, but I was told by the LFS that it did not matter. Last week I found three little babies swimming in the floating plants and moved them to a breeding net. I am feeding them food made specially for fry and they are eating like little pigs. I also have a ten gallon - now with a betta (my gourami got stuck in a shell and died) two glowlights and three head and tail lights - one of which is on his way out due to old age. I am considering adding the babies to the ten gallon when they are large enough if you think they will get along with the betta? I don't want them making any more babies in the ten, so would it be OK to just add the males or just add the females? What do other people do with the babies they find? They are cute little things, but I don't want my tank to look like a sardine can either. My other ten gallon has a paradise fish who would eat them. (I really should be calling myself three tanks now.) Thanks. |

The males and females may be separated without worry when the fry are old enough to be distinguished male and female. Many livebearer enthusiasts offer any extra fry to the lfs in exchange for store credit and another possibility is to leave the fry to serve as live food for the danios and their parents as stated above. I would allow the fry to grow out quite a bit before adding them in with a betta as this type of fish, depending on the individual, may be extremely aggressive and are almost always voracious eaters. Hope that I was of some assistance. Last edited by zachjc_14 at 27-Dec-2005 11:41 |

They stay in there until they are about half an inch, or until they are big enough where they will not fit in there parents mouth, then I put them back in the big tank. Thats how Iv done it since I was five, and thats how I still do it. It works. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

If you place them with other bigger fish, they may be eaten. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

The danios have spawned a couple of times, but I never had any surviving offspring. I am curious what color the platy babies will be. The father and two of the females are sunset, micky mouse. The other female is a really pretty black with blue. Since I have no idea who the mother was, it should be interesting. Right now, they are in a net breeder, but I will have to make other arangements when I clean the tank - do water changes, later this week. They seem to be doing really well at present. |

One of them is showing a tiny black dot on his/her tail. They are about 1/4 inches long now. |

I came across two more tiny ones this week, but one seems to have disappeared. Also, I found a tiny black speck, with two eyes, swimming around in the filter water - think it is a danio; much too tiny to be a platy. It should be interesting to see what that thing is? |
