But is the male got sick? If so, then you probably right that its dropsy. Anyway, don't lose hope, you might get it right next time... best of luck! |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Heidi, Thanks for your support and your encouragement to get a 125. Halequins and Glow-Lights are currently contenders on my stocking plan, but I am sure that my own baby Platys will be in the mix as well. You lost me a little when you talked about your 125 issues, I guess I will have to do some searching on this site to find out. And - one thing is for sure: I will have so many questions regarding the whole 125 project that you will wish I never started it Ingo |

Enjoy, and I'm sure some platy fry will survive, heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Thomas Carlyle |

On the platy front, it's been my experience that some platy males are just, for lack of a better word, "jerks." I had one that was just horrible and behaved much like you described. I have one now that is much nicer; he definitely prefers one of the females over the others, but he just swims beside her constantly and doesn't bother the other females. |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Heidi and ronnfive, Thank you so much for your support. This situation is certainly causing some stress on my end (maybe I will get Dropsy too ) But as you said, you cry a little and then you get back up. I will leave town tomorrow for a while and can only hope that at least my beloved platy fry will survive until I return. I will have access to the forum though, and I will make use of it, even if it is only by helping to maintain our #1 Rank And when I come back I will start on my 125G - Yessssssss Which means I will have many more questions to ask here... Thanks again, Ingo |

There is nothing that you could have done differently, it just happens, and when it does all you can do it cry for a bit, then get back up and stock it again...learning is a huge part of this hobby, don't give up...we've all been there, even the best have been known to lose their stock...hml "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Hi, I am wondering if anyone has a similar experience. About 8 weeks ago, I got 3 adult sunset platys, 2 females ( “The Queen” and “The Princess” ) and one male ( “The King” ). The first 4 weeks were fine, but after that The King started to chase The Queen all the time. He pretty much ignored The Princess and only paid attention to her if he couldn’t see The Queen at all (hiding below some dwarf sag leaves etc.). Within the last 2 weeks, The Queen is now hiding for about 90% of the day and The King is chasing The Princess. It became so bad that all 3 are low on the ground in the plants, 2 hiding and the male trying to get to them. ]:| Last weekend, I separated the male and put him into one of these little breeder cases within the tank. Interestingly, The Princess came out and stood by him for most of the day, but The Queen stayed hidden. At night, I said to myself “this is not working” and released him. And guess what? The Queen and The Princess were all over him and seemed so happy that he is back. Well, this was 2 days ago and now everything is back to the hide and seek game. The natural solution to this would be to add more females, but my capacity is maxed out (6 Zebra Danios, 1 Neon Tetra, 3 Platys with 9 fry in a 29G planted.) I am hoping that nobody gets too exhausted until the fry is bigger and The King could chase after them for a while (no – he is not the father). Any ideas, suggestions, support? Thanks, Ingo |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Ladies and Gents, Thank you so much for your support and advice, but I begin to believe that I have a much bigger problem. It seems to me now that The Queen is actually dying :#( This morning, she was not in hiding and sat on the bottom just below the intake for the filter. The King was right by her side and she almost didn’t care. She is for sure not going to have babies very soon, she is as skinny as she was on the day after she had her last batch (yes, the 9 fry that I have are hers). I am very sad Does anyone know if Platys get NTD? I think that is what is going on in my tank. Thanks again, Ingo |

ronnfive Enthusiast Posts: 188 Kudos: 219 Votes: 0 Registered: 28-Jul-2004 | From what you have stated above, I can say that maybe the queen is almost about to drop another batch, because that is what exactly she is doing when she almost drop a batch. Is the queen dropped the first batch? I looked at it this way, if she dropped the first batch and the fry is 3 ½ weeks old, then she’ll about to drop another batch about half a week, because they always drop a batch every month, providing good food and less stress. You might take out the male again until she drops the second batch. Good luck! Ronn |

houston Fish Guru You want what when? Posts: 2623 Kudos: 2462 Votes: 337 Registered: 29-Mar-2003 | little_fish, go and get just 1 more female platy, sometimes having just the one extra girl in the tank will help reduce the stress on the others. Your King is just a bit too frisky it seems for Queen and Princess, they need another friend to help tame the boy down...also try adding some taller or floating plants so they can hide when he is too much for them to handle You know how us girls are, sometimes we just need a time out and have to have a place for us to go and gossip, about the King of the tank heidi "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | Calla, The fry is the first (and so far only) that I ever had and there is no way that I sell them , except if too many of them turn out to be males. But from what I can tell now (which might not be accurate given that they are only 3 1/2 weeks old) most of them are females. As a matter of fact I haven’t recognized even one male. So for the time being, I have to treat all of my fishies as permanent tank mates (although, I am planning on a 125G). As for the “flirting” part, yes, he is clearly flirting with The Queen, but I don’t think she is really into him. Sometimes he behaves in the same way with The Princess, but other times he is chasing her away, I guess he hasn’t made up his mind yet. Yeah, the neon tetra is a left-over from a small school of 6. I lost 5 within a 4 week span and I am not quiet sure why, they had ich and one later showed signs of NTD, but I cannot nail it down and I will have to wait it out. But that is another story in itself (that I haven’t told here, I am too confused about what is going on there and I cannot put it in words :%) ). Thank you so much for your input, Ingo |

Callatya Moderator The girl's got crabs! Posts: 9662 Kudos: 5261 Registered: 16-Sep-2001 | My platies were definately similar. Appy would follow greengirl all over the tank and only ever went with other females after greengirl died I'd say that you might be best served getting another male and female. I don't think you are necessarily maxed out bioload-wise, especially if you are going to sell the fry at a later stage, you just have chosen fish that utilise the same space of the water column. why a single neon? is he a leftover? ask around your area, find someone with a school of them and donate him. there are a few possibilities with the behaviour. either he is flirting and 'romantically' stalking the both of them, or he is mating with one and telling the other to nick off. look at his gonopodium when he is swimming near them, is it waggling around like a windsock? f so, he is mating. If he is flaring up and chasing at a right angle, he is probably driving the other away. I know that you wouldn't think of a livebearer driving a female away, but after watching Appy and greengirl, I think they have the tendancy to pick a favourite. |
