About two weeks ago we came home from the store to two little baby swordies in the nursery tank with mama swordtail. We put the babies in a net and waited. By morning we could see no more so we put her back in the big tank even though she looked no thinner.
Now we fished 3 more little swordie babies out of the big tank yesterday and still she is hugely pregnant... What is going on? Is this normal? I thought they had all the babies and then one month later, more and so on...

i don't know what is happening, i never bred swordies (although i have a pair) but i had some guppy fry born last night. i think it is unusual, but see if you can put her back in the nursery tank (with lots of plants) and hope for the best, if she hasn't had anymore in say, 3 days, take her out and put her back with the rest.
by the way, how big are the newest born babies? (roughly)
congrats on the fry all the same though

Thanks for the reply. They are about 1/4 inch long. We keep a pretty good eye on the tank so I am sure they weren't in there for any more than a day.

Accually I've heard platies and sowrds have their babies over a period of 1-5 days so this does not seem unusual. Do not worry unless the mother is having difficulties having babies or becomes sick, then of course START WORRYING!

actuall, having said that this has never happened to me, my guppy still seems to be giving birth, she seemed slim for one day, and today she looks as though she'll burst again. so, anyway, have you put her back in the nursery tank again?

Don't keep switching her back & forth between tanks! Put her in the main tank & leave her there. You can always scoop the babys out.
Moving her is only stressing her out & increasing the chances of something going wrong (including her dying, which has been known to happen due to excess stress during birth)

It is unusual for her to be giving birth for such a long period of time, I've never had a drop take more than 48hrs. However, If she appears to be otherwise healthy and is acting normally I wouldn't be too concerned.

I have raised guppies in the past and never moved any of them to another tank. They all seemed to do fine.
