no, they eat almost anything, absolute piggies they are. they like mosquito larvae, but they are just as happy with flakes.

I've seen sites that say they can handle quite low temps, whats the lowest you've ever kept yours calla?
How well would a few do in a small 5 gallon tank. Can they deal with unfiltered like bettas can provided they recieve weekly water changes?

^_^

ok not Calla

Mine have been kept down to 62 degrees F. A few in a 5 gallon tank would be fine. Yes they can easily live in unfiltered water given weekly water changes and fed appropriately.

Koi

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

1.Are they livebearers?

Yep!

2.Will they need a heater?

No. There are places where we stock gambusia for mosquito control here during the summer that almost totally freeze over the winter and they survive. I think an unheated tank will be fine.

3.Should I put salt in the water?

Don't think it's necessary, but won't hurt as far as I know.

4.If so, how much?

5.How many could I put in a 10 gallon?

I would stick with the same guppy ratio at 1 male to 2 females. I would start with that many and just let the tank populate itself. If you have hiding places it won't take long to overstock a 10 gallon.

6.How many could I put in a 20 gallon?

Same as above except I would maybe have three trios instead of one.

T'anks koi and rewd ,
If they can survive the freezing temps then they should do okay in my tank...my house heat frequently fluctuates sometimes as I recently discovered...down to 50 even if it does show up as 60 ....I'll have to keep my eyes open to see if I can find them in the shops.
How active of a fish are they ? The tank I have is a tall hex and I'm worried about swimming room.
