Reason platy moms die after a few births | |
tetratech Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4241 Kudos: 1074 Registered: 04-Nov-2003 | I noticed this in platys from time to time that after the moms give birth a few times they never regain their full shape and end up dying. I don't notice it in guppies, but I have in platys from time to time. Anyone know why? My Scapes |

Back even a hundred years ago, it wasn't uncommon for women to die in childbirth...I too have noticed that sometimes after a female guppy has had several batches of fry, she will die in frybirth...I figure it is because of the drain it takes out of them...sad but true "I've got a great ambition to die of exhaustion rather than boredom." Feed her some good stuff to toughin her back up for the next birth. If they don't get time to recoop inbetween births then you will see them start fading away. They can only take so much drain. Leaving them in the tank with males after having birth gives them constant harasment from the male. This leaves no time for the mom to regain her strength and be ready for the next batch. HTH chris |

The other had babies then I gave her live brine shrimp and she wouldn't eat it. Then the day after she died. R.I.P. Platy Mums |

I have heard that there may be some fungus or bacteria in the water that infects the fish when there are vulnerable to infection. Having babies is a strain on the fish's system, and they may be e to disease. I would make sure your water is clean, so do a 25% water change and possibly treat the tank with some Pimafix.
