They are kept in freshwater their whole lives. You dont need to add any salt to their water at all! And all "colors" of mollys are actually the same species. One is the species Poecilia sphenops (which is black mollies, gold mollies, ballon mollies etc.) See how your LFS keeps them. Many mollies are bred/raised in freshwater. I feel it is an owners decision if they want to keep them with some salt or not. Different species of mollies have been found living in soft freshwater, to full marine water. They are tolerant hardy fish. Find out what your LFS keeps them in (brackish or fresh) and then reproduce those conditions at home. You could even wean them onto freshwater slowly.
