I have been striving to keep the larger veil-tail fancy guppies, but they are consistently being attacked and their fins are uniformly shredded. They are reduced to mere threads within 12 hours. No other inhabitants seem to bother them during the day, but in the morning the guppies are either dead or dying due to their injuries. They currently reside with harley rasboras, white clouds, flame tetras, cory cats, black neons, and other fancy guppies. The fins are not nipped, and the other males with shorter tails have beautiful finnage.

two things. one i think the flame tetras are called serpaes and they are on the sggressive side. if they are serpae's then they might be fin nipping, as well as the other guppies. this is pobably not happening but it could be, the males could be fighting with eachother for females, so the short fins go after the long fins.

Another possible cause may be your filter. Do you have a HOB that the fish may be getting their tails caught up into and thus tearing them.

I agree it's gotta be the tetras...that or other male guppies...how many male guppies do you have in comparison to female guppies? You need to make sure there are plants in the tank also to allow them to hide if need be...if you have them and they are alive with the shredded tails you need to treat them...if you have another tank transfer them to it and start treating them with MelaFix. If not you can start treating them in the tank that they are currently in, but you still need to find out who the cause is...because it won't end till you find the cause. If the cause is too many males, go and get at least 2 females for each male, this will help take care of the aggressiveness that might be going on. best of luck, heidi

I only have a few males and numerous females and my tetras are definately flames. the filter is a possibility, but is seems unlikely.

What size tank is this?

My guess would be the tetras either the flames or the blacks are doing it.

They are not the best tank mates for long flowing finned fish.

The guppy was in a 29, but all in the inhabitants are soon being moved to a 55g.
