Stocking Questions | |
Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | I have a 14 Gallon guppy tank. I have 3 males and 5 females, and of course, they breed monthly (only about 3-6 fry at a time) and I usually use most of the fry for feeder fish in my cichlid tank. I wanted to add a pair of Gourami's to the tank. Would I be overstocking my tank? Its a Marina Aquarium, the one with the Orange hood and blue gravel (it was for my daughter ok!!!!) I have live plants and some rocks in there. Can I add the Gourami's? 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Elongatus, 1 Blue Ahli, 1 Red Kadanga, 1 Mel. Exasperatus, 1 metriaclima emmiltos, 1 Ancistrus. 14.5G 4 Neon Tetras. |

Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Sorry, I should have mentioned that I am considering dwarf gourami's - given the small tank size. 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Its a funny little tank, given the curvature of it. But the best average dimensions are: H = 9 inches, W = 19 inches, D = 8.5 inches 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Elongatus, 1 Blue Ahli, 1 Red Kadanga, 1 Mel. Given that guppies are about 2" each and you have 8- thats already 16" of fish. Your already pretty full to capacity- maybe 1 dwarf if you really wanted to push it and keep up to the water changes. http://www.fishprofiles.com/site/aquarank.aspx |

It's better to be understocked. http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Thanks guys. I think in the back of my mind, I knew that, but I wanted to be sure. I may end up giving away the guppies and stocking dwarf gouramies - I want something a bit more interesting, and generally want to redo the tank. The challenge for me is - getting rid of the guppies without my 3 year old daughter noticing! 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Elongatus, 1 Blue Ahli, 1 Red Kadanga, 1 Mel. Brengun Big Fish Posts: 355 Kudos: 187 Votes: 110 Registered: 22-Jun-2007 | Dwarf gouramis do like to have scraps with each other unless it is a m/f pair. I got around the problem by putting 7 dw's, 2 pearl & 1 moonlight all in together. There is also a bn, 2 albino cories, and 2 pepper cories in the tank. Of course the pearl and moonlight have the option of a bigger tank when they get bigger. Did I mention the tank is 10g? Oops, but everyone is fine and happy. I have extra filtation added, live plants and I keep a close eye on the water quality. Here is a recent pic of my tank. I can only find 7 fish in the shot as I must have missed a couple of inches on the left side, but you get the idea. |

Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | I have to keep the dwarves as my other 72gallon is a cichlid tank, and right now my Venustus is terrorizing the other cichlids....whole new problem. But I started re-doing the 14G., I added a nice piece of driftwood to it, and cleaned up some of the plants - so I am really excited to add the gourami's! Maybe in a month or so, once I've settled my Cichlid tank down a bit. 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. Elongatus, 1 Blue Ahli, 1 Red Kadanga, 1 Mel.
