Is there any particular age or stage when a male swordtail will start to exhibit the tell-tale sword? I have a fish that is of good size (1.5 inches or better) and the "sword" portion of his tail has just started to be prominent in the last week or so. I initially thought I had 2 females until I read a bit more and started to look for the gonopodium as a secondary identifying characteristic.

the gono should be first, b/c older female swords can grow swords after using up thier female qualitys.

Now, do the swordtails ACTUALLY change sex or do they just take on male characteristics? I've heard of mollies truly changing sex but not swordtails...
