I just got three new swordtail in my 90g tank (1 male 2 Females). I am wondering how long it will take for them to start breeding? Should I get more females? I am also planning to add a few Sailfin Molly (Poecilia velifera & Poecilia latipinna) with the same ratio 2 females and 1 male. I am wondering if this combination is a good idea. Will they breed at the same ratio as the swordtails?

1m/3f is better ratio or more females. usually, females are always pregnant. you can see results in a month or less. good water and good food will help them develop the fry faster inside thier tummies. mine, i feed them mosquito larvae before putting them to isolation with lots of plants for fry fortunately, i got lots and lots of fry. and there still to come. so, prepare yourself to buy another tank. yes, it's okay to add some mollies or platies and the ratio still the same as above... good luck!!!:88)

You usually do not have to worry about how long it will take for them to begin breeding, as your females are most likely pregnant. You need a LOT of plants and decorations for the fry to hide and grow in.

Also, livebearers have the ability to have multiple broods with just one breeding.

Thank for you replies.

BTW, I was under the impression that the swordtail male and females will stay together. I notice that the male always stay hidden. Is this normal? The 2 females are always together.

Mine do that to a point too. The two females that I bought together are always togehter, the 3rd female keeps to herself in the corner and my males always stay in the other corner...although I have yet to keep a male alive for more then 3 months....
