Swordtail going crazy | |
bharatk Hobbyist Posts: 57 Kudos: 43 Votes: 3 Registered: 04-Oct-2004 | recently one of my male swordtail is bahaving strangly. It swims up and down in a circular manner for 3-4 seconds as if he is bitten by someone. This happens atleast 8-10 times in a day. Water parameters are perfect and all other fish are showing good health. This swordtail shows no other physical signs of illness and eats normally. I had 1 pair initially but then added 2 more females. I have 30 G tank and the other residents are; 2 Neon Blue dwarf Gourami 4 Guppies 1 fantail gold my tank is well planted with enough hiding places. what could be the reason? |

If you keep it like it is the two males will harrass each other in the tank trying to see who is more dominant and gets the females |

bharatk Hobbyist Posts: 57 Kudos: 43 Votes: 3 Registered: 04-Oct-2004 | Hi Perky.... I understand your point. But as I had mensioned before both the males just ignore eachother ... fight is out of question! they are more interested in eating than harrasing each others. |

I just want to be sure before I jump to any conclusions. Also, you say the water parameters are perfect, would you please list them to help us get to the root of the problem? Thanks! Oh, one more thing, I have never had a problem with having multiple male swords in with multiple female swords, so I would not think that would have anything to do with it, particularly as you have seen the strange behavior but have seen no harrassment. Perky Mega Fish Posts: 1064 Kudos: 1036 Votes: 162 Registered: 24-Nov-2003 | I ain`t saying it is the females, it just before I had a dominant male and one of the fry he gave birth to developed to be another male and harrassment was caused due to that. It wasn`t all the time, just every so often say when they were going to breed. Stormy, is that the same butterfly you have in the avatar? |

bharatk Hobbyist Posts: 57 Kudos: 43 Votes: 3 Registered: 04-Oct-2004 | hey guys... bad news. The male swordail died yesterday. still donno what went wrong. The water temp yesterday was 86 F. It was a very hot day. can it be the reason? well... the other fish are doing fine. The water temp is above 82 F for last 15 days and it will continue to be for next 2 months. Did a 30% water change yestreday that should take care of any contamination. This is the first loss in this year. Last edited by bharatk at 05-Apr-2005 04:40 |

If he already had something wrong with him, the shock of the water jumping that high could definitely have killed him. Poor little guy! Good luck with the rest of the fishies! |
