I dropped in at Austral Watergardens at Cowan today, and was looking at the pond plants etc, and then noticed the fish in there. They had different types in each pond, and they weren't your standard goldfish/koi. In one pond they had some brilliant blue fish that looked like guppies. Anyway, when I enquired about them, it turned out that they were indeed guppies. They also had platies and a variety of other fish.

The guppies and platies were cold water ones and they have been breeding them for years. Apparently very occaisionally, on really cold nights during winter they sometimes lose some (no nights cold enough last year), but basically no problem.

I was on my bike so I couldn't really get any, but I'm definitely going back for a few of the blue guppies. They looked lovely, and they said they did indeed look even better in a tank.

Of course they also have lots of aquatic plants. I got a pretty big bunch of Ambulia for $5.

Well worth the trip!

coldwater guppies, mollies and platies aren't really going to be suitable for a frosty pond. They are just on the cooler range of temperate, they aren't really cold cold water.
...

*cough*

I must admit, that's what I would have thought, but these guys appear to be thriving, and have apparently been doing so for many years.

I guess the ponds get enough full sun to keep them warm enough, and I guess also that even though we think the winters in Sydney are damn cold, others on this forum think of our winter temps as summer ones....
