I bought a trio of lyre tail mollies the other day to go into my tank with 3 zebra danios, neon tetras, a paradise fish, a swordtail, and some night gobys. The female molly and the female swordtail will go up to the male and bite him, he will not try to swim away but instead float vertically with his head pointing up for a little while then swim normally again. He does not seem to be getting hurt as he acts, eats, swims, etc. normally other than this. Is this normal molly behavior? i have had mollies before and never had them do this, or it is a sign of a disease?

I had this problem a long while back. In the end I lost my male. It starts out gentle but the problem is that they do not except the male. I heard if you have 2 females to one male of the same species it helps out. But I never had the chance to try it. Id say get another female or seperate the male form the rest for a while, and see what happens.

Robert

P.S. What size is the tank?

I think it might have just been an adjustment to the tank (hopefully) because now he is trying to breed with the females like crazy! Thanks for your help and sorry about your mollies!

I would keep an eye on him, mollies are very suceptable to swim bladder disease. If it doesn't happen very often I would not worry. I also had a betta do the same thing when I fed a certain type of food. From others I have talked to they believe it was either gas or constipation. Seriously! I hope all is well and that you enjoy your mollies. I think they are probably the greatest of the more commonly available livebearers.
