Hello everyone

I have 3 play fry. They are about 4 months old and 2 of them are just under an inch long. However one of my fry is only about half an inch. Is it safe to add some more fish to my tank. As of right now they are the only fish in my tank but I would like to get some more. Maybe some more platies or a gourami. Would my fry still be eaten at this size and age.

Also any ideas on why that 3rd fry isn't growing as fast as the rest?

P.s I have a 10 Gallon tank with my fry being the only occupants right now.

Thanks a bunch!

Not an expert myself, but based on what others have told me, Gouramis like to eat fry, so I would worry about the real little one for sure. Not sure about the inch ones. I have about 15-20 frys myself, all about 3 wks old. They are just starting to gain their color and growing big. (mine are all about 1/2 inch). But I do have some that are still small...but I think that is because I don't feed them separately from the adult platys I have, so they may not be getting as much. (I plan on getting a gourami soon, too)

Hope that helps a little bit...its all I know...but there will be others with better advice.

They're still young, and should do some more growing over the next few months. Make sure that water quality is top notch and provide a nutritious flake food, to help them along. I'd not put in anything more than two times their current size, to avoid having them nipped or eaten.

thanks guys..

One more quick question.. at what age will the gender of the fry be evident? Right now they all look like females. Does this mean they will stay females or is it possible that one or some might still be male?

Thanks again!

They may all be females but they are probably too small yet to tell. My swordtails mature at different rates some will develop tails and gonopodia early while others of the same batch take their time. I have some males about 5 months just starting to get their tails and they are almost 2 inches long.

You could put something small in with them.

Good luck, Mike

feed them live food, like daphnia for fast growth.

ok on closer inspection of my littlest fry, it seems his body is kind of crooked. Mostly his tail area. Top view it seems his body curves to the right, but on side view it appears his body curves upwards. Sounds odd I know.
What could have caused that?

Genetic defect, If you keep it don't let it breed.

Sorry, Mike
