I don't have my swordtails and platies in the same tank (yet), but they can breed with each other. I'd wondered the same thing, and how the babies would turn out.
I'm sure other people on here can get more scientific on it, but simple answer is yes.

Yes they can. When you look at it, swordtails are platies that have males that grow fancy tails. Also, it has been done countless times to create many different color forms in both platies and swords.

So in short, YES.

thanks, I DON'T want babies, so I guess I will NOT get some swordtails to go with my female platys.
