My friend works in a restaurant with a 100gal tank. It started with several swordtails, and now they have......lots. I have no idea how many it was. I know with some fish, they need a certain PH or temp to breed. Is there something like this that can be adjusted to STOP the breeding of swordtails?

thanks

-By the way, if anybody who lives near Long Beach, CA. wants...ANY amount of gold swordtails, I can get you all you want for free.

What other fish are in the tank? Maybe You could just get a certain fish that likes swordtail fry. Yum yum.

My suggestion would be to have a tank of all females or all males.... Just remember! The females could become pregnant even after the males are removed -- due to their ability to hold sperm....... This is pretty much the way of all livebearers --- If you don't want fry, have only one sex!

Since I think it would be very difficult to convert the fish to all one sex, I would get a fish that would eat the fry. In a tank that size, there are several different gouramis possible, dwarfs, blues, golds, opalines, sparkling, moonlight, honey...of course, this also depends on what else is already in the tank. Most gouramis are pretty hardy, and very pretty IMO.
To give more suggestions it would be convenient to know the stocking list of that tank, are there more inhabitants other than swordtails?

There is one Irridescent shark, and LOTS of swordtails. There will be one common pleco that I am giving to her (its going to outgrow my tank), but thats it. I'm also only guessing at the tank size, it is at LEAST 100gal, could easily be more.

I wouldn't want to add more fish just now for over-stocking reasons, but if we can get rid of some of the swordtails, then gouramis or something else could be added.

Everybody suggests gouramis for fry control in sword tanks anymore! I have a gourami with my swords and it does nothing to the fry. Oh well at least I have a LFS that will buy my fry.
