Platies aren't very large, but mollies & swords get to at least the 4" mark. Many people say mollies to better with some salt in their water, something to think about. Platies and swords will also cross-breed. Male swords are often show agression towards each other, so there's a chance they'd be agressive with any male platies you might have. Depending on the tank size, it might be best to choose one species and maybe some sort of bottom feeder. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

How big is your tank & how many fish are you thinking of having?. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Unless you buy very high quality fish from a breeder (usually can't get them from a fish store). Otherwise you'll be lucky to give away the babies for free. Also you have to be very strict on what fish are allowed to breed in order to keep your strain pure and improve it. Usually breeding fish like that requires several small-medium sized tanks instead of 1 large one. Each breeding group has to be kept seperate and the fry you want to save need a tank to themselves. You can also toss a bunch of different livebearers in a 100g tank and I wish you luck figuring out what to do with them in say 6months when you have dozens to hundreds of fry about to overstock your tank and noone will take them. Been there I cycled my 90g with guppies then moved them to my smaller tnaks and was having fun breeding various colors. Eventually I had to face reality, seperate my males and females, and go around to fish stores begging them to take my fry. |

Thats what i keep one thing i would advise, is beware that these fish can and will breed out of control. you really can overstock a tank fast if you plan on keeping every batch of fry that comes out. plus, the females give birth something like every 28 - 34 days. you mentioned something like a dream tank... can you tell us what the actual tank dimensions are? or is this just a speculation? *Chelle* I love the fishes cuz they're SOOO delicious... |

esandbergger Hobbyist Posts: 133 Kudos: 128 Votes: 0 Registered: 12-Jun-2005 | ya folks this was just speculation....I currently have a 29g with 8 mollies, 4 guppies and a shoal of albino cories. Any females who appear prego go to my 10g and so far i have about 5 guppies. I have ottos in the ten for algae and i also have 2 very small loaches for snail patrol. I have a betta in my 29g for the centerpiece. I had been keeping the 29g on my didning room table, however, due to structural problems, everyone is in the ten and i do not think that i will have many fry when the 29g is stabilized. The move will occur tomorrow.... My table was not properly supporting the tank and the glass had begun to bow by about a millimeter....I bought a stand, a level and some shims and now the tank is completely flat. I am glad i didn't have a blowout... Edna Sorry for going off topic, its been a long night of trying to get the tank stand erected |
