ok.. i know this is a dumb question.. haha.. but i have this coral platy... that had some fry about 2-3 months ago.. well... all of a sudden i noticed some of her fry are swordtails... is it that she is a SWORDTAIL female, or could she have cross-bred with either my pineapple swordtail or my marigold swordtail? hmm.. the fry all look like the momma... and she had the babies about a month after i got her, so she could have been pregnant when i bought her, but i bought her as a platy(i thought).

a pic would be good, usually mollies and swordtail females can be more commonly confused, but usually not sword tail and platies, as platies don't tent to be as slim as swordtails.

i would guess that she may have been bred with otehr fish.

It is most likely that the platy bred with the swordtail. Interbreeding can be a problem for platy's and swordtails, because it produces live fertile offspring. Both species are from the genus (i tihnk its the genus) Xiphophorus, which allows them to interbreed with ease.

I suggest seperating the swordtail males and platy females to prevent more hybrids.

Yep I would guess a hybrid too.
A swordtail platy x.
Whether you seperate them or not is up to you.

Ive read that most swords and platies are all hybrid of 2 or 3 different species. Most platies may be hybrids already.
