eight 1.5 week old Platies... | |
T/A Mega Fish Posts: 942 Kudos: 1796 Registered: 20-Feb-2004 | Currently I have the 8 Platy fry in a 10 gallon. I have live Hornwort floating at the surface and some Willow Moss on the bottom. And I also have a sponge filter in this tank for added bio-filtration. As they get bigger I don't want to crowd them. I'll have room for 3 of them(adult size) in one of my other tanks. So that want be a problem. I know I'll be good for a few months, but when do you think I should split them up? |

I imagine a good time to split them up out of a ten gallon would be when they get to be about 1/4 inch long. give them about a month and a half, and see how their eating habits and social habits are, sometimes the males will chase the females even before they're ready to breed. what are you planning on splitting them into? tank-wise i mean. *Chelle* I love the fishes cuz they're SOOO delicious... |

Well if these fry take after their parents, I won't have to worry about that. The father of these fry didn't develope a gonopodim until he was 11 months old. And it took another month for the breeding to start. How I split them up all depends on the number of males in this group of 8. I'm hoping there is only 2 males. That way I will be able to move those 2 males and their "daddy" into my other 10 gallon tank. The females will all remain in the tank that they're in now. With the exception of maybe moving 1 or 2 of them into my 25 gallon tank. |

But, for a number of reasons, I might be forced to move them sooner. That's why I'm doing my best to grow these guys up alittle faster. Fresh, quality foods and plenty of water changes. So far they seem to be growing better than their parents did, since the parents were born and raised in community tanks that recieved no special care. |
